Charles J. Fronczek JrClass Of...1959 Years Attended1955-1959 About MeThis will be a work in progress. As my class approaches its 50th anniversary, I thought that it was time to actively join the group instead of lurking in the background. School NotesI have many memories of Kanty starting with the day my father dropped me off at the front door. Actually, I remember an even earlier incident. My uncle who was a graduate of the class of 1927 and my father informed me that I was going to Kanty. No questions asked. I went crying to my mother, who was in the hospital at the time. I didn't want to leave home and my brothers, sisters and friends. The all knowing parent said "Try it for 1 year if you don't like it then.... Needless to say four years later, I remember most vividly being chosen class valedictorian. I was both honored and apprehensive of the thought of giving the valedictory speech. My only solace was that I was going to give it in English. I had to applaud then and still now Conrad (Connie) Czaplicki who had to prepare and present the salutatory address in Polish. Since Graduation...I attended St Vincent College in Latrobe, PA where I received a B.A. in Mathematics in 1963. I joined the US Navy for a short period. I then went to work as a Civil Engineer in training for a small 15 person firm. There I learned the rudiments of land surveying. That lead me to working for the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey. I was employed as a geodesist. (Geodesy, for the unknowing, is the branch of applied mathematics which studies the size and shape of the earth.) In 1972, the USC&GS sent me, for 2 years, to graduate school at The Ohio State University where I completed the course work for a doctorate in geodesy. I then returned to work and was in charge of the survey, for what I called, strange and unusual structures.
In 1982, I was recruited by what was then known as the National Bureau of Standards, now the National Institute of Standards and Technology, to lead a special projects group. I retired in 2004 after 39 years 7 months of Federal service. I'm currently rebuilding my house, playing golf, swimming, bowling and skiing.
